If you are enamored with "straight ahead" Jazz - e.g., the be-bop, cool jazz, hard bop genres' - you should know that Detroit has probably had more great Jazz players associated with it than any other city. The talent here is so deep, even now, that it will blow you away.

Try Bakers Keyboard Lounge on Livernois south of 8 Mile almost any night and you will be glad you did. History of Bakers is deep. The oldest surviving Jazz club in the world. Older than all those places on 52nd Street in NYC. Every great player has been there. www.bakerskeyboardlounge.com. As they say on the website: "Bakers Keyboard Lounge, the world’s oldest jazz club. During our 72 year history, almost every jazz musician of national importance has played our bandstand".

Now, the players are local. They have always been diverse but an excellent example is a trumpet player of enormous talent ("great chops") who happens to be an Orthodox tribe member. Literally, I saw a set where his tsi tsis were literally out of the pants and swinging like a mother... Okay, not that word, but, ah, maybe a monkey on a vine. That's better.

InZer0, Thought Collide’s science fiction series shot entirely in Detroit and screened monthly at the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak, provides the ambiance for the evening, offering a party in the broken future - today. This is the best combination of music, film, fashion and oh yeah – ZOMBIES.
On October 27th, the Hastings Street Ballroom becomes the epicenter of Detroit's Creative Quake, where the movers and shakers in a wide range of creative markets will gather to celebrate the strange and spooky Halloween Season, as well as come together to explore and develop new opportunities, discussions, collaborative ventures and ideas!

The not-to-be-missed Halloween Party of the year will feature premiere Detroit area bands, Siddhartha and Phallus Uber Alles. Local fave Siddhartha (formerly Velvet Audio) is an original combination of in your face rock n’ roll and funk, while Phallus Uber Alles is a sonic wall of industrial electronica.

For those of you that need to catch up on InZer0, selected episodes and documentary footage will be shown in the lounge area of the Hastings Street Ballroom.

We’ve thrown down the gauntlet in the “Cool Costume Contest” -- test your creativity and compete for prizes. Dress as your favorite InZer0 character – Courier, Gang Member, Witch or Alien – or wow the judges with your own Halloween style. See if you can compete with the Hot Zombies or stretch your imagination to its limits.
The eclectic mix of talent from so wide a swath will create a Halloween event like no other in the "D." Come and help us celebrate the explosion of Detroit's Creative and Cultural Arts.

Although each individual component of the Roaring 20's Masquerade Ball would make for a fun evening out on the town, it's the grandness of this event that sets it apart from all others. The Roaring 20's Masquerade Ball is a Sound & Vision Musical that tells the tale of Nick Fudrich, a Detroit River dock worker during the prohibition era. As with the finest fashion collections, several common threads are used to tie together the individual components of this production: Music, fashion and staging inspired by the 1920's. Actors to give the event its grounding. And a bold narrator.

I'm new to Ann Arbor and am looking to find good club nights (techno, house). I was here several years ago when I had a chance to go to the Motor Lounge, which sadly closed some time ago. Anyone know of a good venue in Detroit/upcoming events?

The Necto in Ann Arbor seems to have gone down the tubes (they used to host amazing DJ's, but no longer...). I read about something at Clutch Cargo's next week; how about other clubs, or good resident nights?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
January 23, 2004 – February 22, 2004
Opening Reception: Friday, January 23, 2004
7 pm – 11pm

Severance, located in Eastern Market in downtown Detroit, will be exhibiting paintings created by Scott Hullinger. The opening reception will be held on Friday, January 23, 2004 from 7 o’clock pm until 11 o’clock pm. The exhibit will run until Sunday, February 22, 2004.

Hullinger’s work is best described as “Biological Landscapes”, explorations into the microscopic world that surrounds each and every one of us. He shows the natural and industrial conflict ever present in our world, by setting parasitic organisms against the backdrop of world industries, such as stock quotes. Fall into the world that you already belong to, only this time look through a microscopic lens.

Hullinger creates these beautifully powerful paintings using media created by nature, like beeswax and paper. Just another facet to show the continuously dueling worlds of industry and nature.

Hullinger is a Detroit artist that has shown at such places as The Scarab Club, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, The Majestic, and The Detroit Contemporary, to name a few. He received his Master of Art degree from Wayne State University and his Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from Western Michigan University. Currently teaching Art in the South Redford school district, Hullinger continues to create these masterpieces.

Detroit’s very own Keith Kemp will provide the audio landscape for the opening reception. Live broadcast of the event will be provided by The Daughters at http://thedaughters.ath.cx.

The evening will be a wonderful night of art, music and food provided by Harry’s Detroit. Harry’s is located at 2482 Clifford Detroit, MI 48201 ph: 313.964.1575 www.harrysdetroit.com.
